facebook carpool application Rating: ★★★★☆
I was excited to see this new facebook carpool application. Carpooling is not what you might think. People carpool to and from work together, for road trips, to see the family, and lot’s of different occasions. Carpooling is actually gaining in popularity as a way to conserve energy. I like that when I offer a ride it shows in my mini-feed, this lets my network know about it easily.

This application is a fully integrated solution that has robust functionality. The user interface is very intuitive and well designed. I really like the google maps integration in the application as well. With the facebook carpool application you can easily:
- See all your Facebook friends’ rides
- View rides in your network
- Search all rides
- Add ride offers or requests, for commutes or one-time trips
- Make requests/offers while browsing and see the profiles of those you wish to ride with
- Manage your frequent locations using Google Maps
- View all requests/offers for your rides online
- Display your rides on your Facebook profile…if you want to
- Determine how far a detour you need to drive to pick someone up
- Track all the rides you’ve shared, the miles you’ve traveled and your reduction in CO2 emissions ;)

I spoke with the developers tonight and they informed me that the application works not only in the US, but in Canada and England as well. Smart! It also ties into your myspace account as an option. There are even more enhancements on the board that will be released in the near future. If you are into carpooling, this is application right up your alley, so give it a try.

Ya I wonder how many carpools are going to lead to kidnappings, murders, missing persons etc…

Actually the service makes carpooling and ride sharing much safer in my humble opinion. You get to know the people and might possibly even have some friends in common. Think about it, it is all open in the public on facebook for all to see.

Yup, that’s exactly my first thought.

At least, if you do get murdered and chopped up into tiny glovebox-sized pieces, the cops can just go to your Facebook page and find out who you were planning on riding with for that weekend trip to the nearest Apple Store.

I figured someone would make a carpool app with Facebook soon. As a competitor, I say good for you! We need Carpool tools where there are people looking for tools.

I struck upon an idea of car pooling and I thought a bidding process like ebay will enhance the experience of car pooling and at the same time allow drivers to make some money by filling the empty space in their vehicle. I was dreaming of anyone wanting to go somewhere, just log-in and find a rider who is travelling to the same destination or close to it. I have seen my neighbours in the same supermarket, and i seen my friends in the same mall, why not hitch a ride instead of driving myself. Well, it is embarassing to ask them! How about an online platform which will allow drivers to find riders. It will allow drivers to make some money to offset fuel and maintainance costs and it will allow riders to travel cheaply. If the concept of carpooling is embraced, and if we can reduce the number of single driver cars on the road, it will substantially reduce the number of vehicles on the road, will reduce emissions, less infrastructure costs for parking and I believe it will be a win for everyone! With this idea, I developed a site http://www.cabiecar.com which I thought will take off, I thought it would be fun to bid on a travel space and a feedback mechanism on the riders and drivers will propel this platform to allow users to have a unique and fun experience both online as well as on the ride! Any input would be helpful! This service is Free!!!

There’s a great website called GishiGo ( http://www.GishiGo.com ) that does a lot the “free and anonymous” social networks avoid. It helps people exchange identity using PayPal. And it creates a papertrail and bunch of other good stuff. I use it all the time. And I use the social networks like Craigslist and Kijiji and MySpace. The more people who see my GishiGo rideshare post the more likely I will have successful carpool. And it helps me build confidence. That’s the real issue. Applaud the guys who are using Facebook account to help with the confidence issue. GishiGo.com seems really good to me. There are a bunch of other websites, but this GishiGo is very powerful network design and only one that is so convenient to me. No registration. Open to anyone who isn’t fearful of exchanging their identity (basically filtering out the “need anonymous” people, which is what I want in ridesharing).

This is great! I was actually looking for a Facebook app to sell my snowmobile with (found one actually, pretty cool and free!: http://apps.facebook.com/sellmyride/)
Anyways, this app will come in very handy come September when I’ll need it to commute as we only have one car and my wife needs it. Awesome!

    Thank you!
