A watershed event has just occurred. Linkedin has an application on Facebook called “My Company’s Hiring”. It does just one thing. It allows you to post a job listing… Simple, easy straightforward, and not connected to your LinkedIn account in any way.

Interesting to note that one of the biggest social networking sites for professionals has made an application for what many would consider their biggest competitor.The problem is this facebook application does not tie into your linked in network, account, or Linkedin at all. This is merely a way for Linkedin to have a facebook application and get their brand on facebook.

The application is easy to use. You can easily post a job opening, but it only goes to your profile page and mini-feed. All you can do is go to the job listing details (you can share it from there). The job name link takes you to the detailed listing. From there they can go to a contact page and contact the job poster or a web page that they choose to take you to.

There is no “job board”, there is no way to search for job listings, the application only puts a link in your mini-feed and on your profile page. So the visibility for any job listing is fairly limited. Only your network of friends can see it. Another shortcoming is the fact that you don’t have a detailed form for salary, experience, job category, etc. This might be due to the fact that it does not look like it ties to any other central searchable job posting location. Weak.

You would think that a company with LinkedIn’s resources could do way better than this. This simple application could be coded in a week or less. I think the mad rush to get an application onto facebook has blinded them; the key is to have a useful application, not a 1 dimensional app that has no legs, interaction or deep ability to share… maybe they just don’t get it. If someone from Linkedin wants to reach out and set me straight please do so.
