Since it is a holiday and many people are heading to the beaches we thought it would be appropriate to talk about a new surf reporting application on facebook. The surf forecasts report from Global Safari is a fairly straight forward application.

It allows users to get seven day surf forecasts for global locations. You can display the report on your profile page. You can also post messages onto the surf forecast page to share your surfing thoughts with others. It also provide a short summary such as: “Outlook - The outlook is for the waves are set to decrease over the forecast period. With the best height coming in on Thursday 05th and the worse on Tuesday 10th. Looks like there’s going to be some waves for this period, so get down to the beach”

You can set the surf forecast location to over 80 different world wide locations via a drop down menu. I do wish it had more specific locations for specific beaches (southern California is a pretty big range). You can also comment and share a bit with the application, but it’s functionality for interaction is very light. The application also has a set of links to different surf related groups within facebook.

I would like to see the functionality of this application mashed up with live surf cams from organizations such as Surfrider. It would be really compelling if I could see the report as well as live video images of the waves. It would also be more useful and engaging if people could share surfing photos through the application. If you are a surfer or just want to know the specifics on wave forecasts you will probably like this application.
