TheStreet.com Doesn’t Understand Facebook
3 Comments Published by Rodney Rumford September 10th, 2007 in Facebook, Facebook News.Check out this recent interview on TheStreet.com with Jim Kramer. The interviewer Farnoosh Torabi said “facebook is made up of primarily high school kids” (what rock is she living under and where did she come up with that non-fact)?
A couple of points to ponder:
* Facebook does create content that is viral (Jim got that right)
* Facebook might not want to sell
* How would Google “Plug in Facebook”?
* Non one has even seen facebook’s revenue plans (I suspect they are coming in due time and will be impressive)
* Facebook doesn’t need Google’s expertise
* Google does not need to acquire facebook for facebook to be a success
* Facebook is a known brand (Jim got that right)
* Facebook is the 6th most trafficked website
* Who says they will not have the numbers when they IPO? Jim, quit speculating and speaking as if this is a fact.
These analysts act like Google is God and only they could make facebook a viable web solution. Google’s own foray into social networking is weak (Orkut). So what makes them think Google could run facebook better than facebook?
Whenever people compare facebook to MySpace it shows how little they understand what Facebook does. Facebook is a Social Operating System and Eco-System.
p.s. They miss the fact that facebook can target me better than Google ever could. Facebook is not about youthful demographics; it is about multiple targeted demographics.

I’m sorry guys … but atleast the numbers are in her favour to use the word “primarily”.
All of us Web 2.0 types make up soo little of the actual millions and millions of facebook users.
Maybe she should have said the “younger crowd” (which again is majority school and college types)
But facebook is no linkedin!
Yet!
“high school students” is where I had an issue. But you are right in saying “younger crowd”.
Hey Rodney, don’t understimate orkut. it is huge in brazil and india (remember, india has 1 billion people). The fact it isn’t popular here yet is not indicative that google is missing out on this market, they could have 100million users in a year if growth continues globally (granted that traffic isn’t as easy to monetize as US traffic, but still worth noting).
