Facebook Gifts Gets Sponsored. Ok, virtual goods on facebook are a pretty cool thing. People normally pay a buck to send a gift of the day (digital image) to friends along with a note.

Pretty cool idea, and I am sure it is/was a nice revenue stream for facebook.

But then came all the free facebook gift applications. I would imagine this decreased the amount of money people spent on these facebook gifts of the day.

But hey, facebook is smart and thinks on their feet and knows how to adapt.

For the first time that I can find (out of over 230 gifts), that todays gift is sponsored by Skittles to announce a new Skittles gum.

You can give the gift for free. There is also a link to what appears to be a relatively new (August 2) Skittles sponsored group on facebook for the new skittles gum. There are already over 5000 members.

I have no idea what the sponsorship of the free gift costs; but that is not the issue here. The issue here is giving people the ability to show brand affinity and extend the Skittles Brand further into the facebook profile page and eco-system. It is a way to have a piece of 66×63px real estate on 250,000 profile pages.

I would expect to see these branded images link to sponsored groups or other places within facebook in the future.

This is super smart branding for Skittles. I mean come on… who doesn’t love Skittles. I have a relative that has a dog named is Skittles.
