Improved Facebook Friend Requests is Now Live. This might seem like a very small change, but it makes a huge difference to me & millions of other facebook users. Now when you see a friend request, you can instantly see how many common friends you have. With 1 click you can see which mutual friends you have. This small change greatly enhances usability. This makes it very efficient for determining if you run in the same circles. It is also a way to separate out people that run in a circle where you care not to associate yourself.

By seeing instantly which common friends you have you can make a quicker decision whether to add that person as a facebook friend. I am not a facebook “Friend Collector” and I am reasonably discerning about whom I choose to have in my network of friends/contacts.

As a general rule I will always add any real world contact, friend, or business associate that I have met in person or spoken with. Additionally, I add people that I would like to have contact with that have reached out to me; after I look at their profile (and our common friends).

Choose your friends wisely, it does have an impact on your data-stream of content in your news-feed. I have only had to De-Friend 2 people out the ~450 friends that I have on facebook for behavior that annoyed me or stepped over the line (which is less than 0.5%). ;)

One final recommendation on sending facebook friend requests: Take the time and write a personal note when sending the friend request if you have not met this person in the real world. That personal touch makes all the difference. If someone can’t take the time to jot me a quick note, it makes me wonder how solid the connection will be.

I don’t think the dropdown menu is new; I’ve used “View Friends” > “Mutual Friends” in the past when deciding whether to accept friend requests. But the simple addition of the text right in the request is still very welcome.
