The Stanford College Facebook Class So you are discussing your fall college course schedule with your parents and you tell them you are taking a Facebook Class at Stanford… “Say what? I am not sending you to college to screw off on some website” might be the initial response.

There is actually a course at Stanford that is aimed at helping entrepreneurs and programmers embrace facebook and figure out how to make facebook applications. The class is being instructed by Dr. BJ Fogg and Dave McClure.

When you have a top tier college embracing the facebook platform; it speaks volumes as to what academia thinks about the potential of the facebook platform and it’s use cases for entrepreneurs. Businesses will be built entirely on the facebook platform in some cases. There are many use cases for applications on facebook and students will be exploring the possibilities.

“We don’t want people to read case studies, we want people to build case studies,” McClure said in an interview. They have also set up a facebook group for the class. You can read more details about the Facebook course here.

I think this is going to be a great class and I can imagine thousands of other college students and young entrepreneurs wishing they could get into this Facebook Applications Class.

ABC News has an article that describes the concept in depth and has comments from myself, and one of the class organizers Dave McClure.

The Stanford Facebook Course Overview:

In this experimental course students will learn how to create, launch, and optimize web applications. Guided by the instructors and outside experts, students will work in small, interdisciplinary teams to conceptualize, develop, and distribute new functionality to Facebook users. This course will focus on how metrics and user feedback can help developers and product managers improve their applications.

    Hey Rodney,

I’m Dan, the head Course Assistant for the Stanford Facebook class. We’ve had two great classes so far, and in two weeks, our students will launch their first versions of their apps!

There’s a lot of great excitement in the air, and we’ve upped our enrollment cap to about 90 (from 40!) Tough to squeeze 90 of us into one classroom, but it’s too hard to turn people away. :)
Stay tuned, because our students are going to build some really cool apps over the next 6-8 weeks.
