[...] FaceReview reports that there are close to 6,000 applications on Facebook Apps. That’s an average of 1,200 applications a month! or 40 a day! Is this saturating already or is there more to come? [...]

I found a better tool for searching withing facebook apps: Iterating lists hundreds of apps here http://www.iterating.com/productclasses/Facebook-Applications and you can filter them by class, audience, user reviews and many more!

It's tough to compete with the beast themselves - seems that Facebook takes a very darwinian approach to product development; release something, prioritize features users want in a semi-organized fashion and then go build it.

I do think that this app should have RSVC functionality to power it from a social dimension. That would be key to growth and re-use.

Yes it is, but you have to have an exact match on some keywords for the app to appear. Sometimes it does not find cards when you search for card. Plus the directory on facebook just continues to frustrate me when I use it. The UI on facebook could be much better. This app is just faster and much easier to use. ;)
