facebook and attorney general cuomo reach safety agreementATTORNEY GENERAL CUOMO AND FACEBOOK ANNOUNCE NEW MODEL TO PROTECT CHILDREN ONLINE:

Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo and Facebook today announced a new model to enforce safeguards aimed at protecting its network members, especially children and adolescents, from sexual predators, obscene content and harassment.

Under the terms of the settlement, Facebook will begin enforcing its safety procedures promptly responding to user complaints about nudity or pornography or harassment or unwelcome contact within 24 hours, and allowing an Independent Safety and Security Examiner (ISSE), a third party examiner, approved by the New York State Attorney General, to report on Facebook’s compliance for two years. Facebook has about 47 million users.

This agreement means that facebook has stepped up to the plate and responded to safety concerns. They have done this quicker than most sites of their size. This will bode well for the long term growth and safety of the facebook community and eco-system.

Some quotes from Chris Kelly, Chief Privacy Officer, Facebook. “In addition to the terms of the agreement laid out by Attorney General Cuomo, Facebook will continue to develop sophisticated safety technology and offer users extensive privacy controls so they can make their information available only to the people they choose.”

“We will welcome the Independent Safety and Security Examiner to work closely with me and the other members of our Privacy and Safety team, including former Indiana Attorney General Jeff Modisett, and former Federal Trade Commissioner Mozelle Thompson.”

Chris also stated “We live in an age in which communication is transforming. More people share information online than ever before. Privacy and safety are a core part of helping individuals share information with the people who matter to them most. Society must educate its youth about safe practices on the Internet and empower its children to act responsibly.”
