Google OpenSocial Group on Facebook
Published by Rodney Rumford November 3rd, 2007 in Facebook, OpenSocial.
With all the hubub going on around the new Google OpenSocial Platform API I wanted to get a group of interested people together to share ideas on how businesses could use Google OpenSocial For Business and Branding.
The funny thing was that we had to think about the best way to do this…. uuuummmm it took a whole 2 seconds. Set up a OpenSocial Group on Facebook (not Myspace, Hi5, Bebo, Friendster or Google’s own Orkut)! Facebook groups have always been one of the best out there online and they just keep getting better and better.
Google’s OpenSocial API is a step towards an easier world for creating products that can live in multiple social environments. It is not a clearly unified standard; but it is the best one we have. Time to roll up our shirt sleeves and get dirty with it to see how it can best be used. (facebook has not jumped in at this point… time will tell)
We think that it is quite telling that we are using a facebook group to discuss Google’s OpenSocial Product.
So come on over and join in the conversation and share what you are thinking about Google OpenSocial. We want the topics to be varied; but focused on business and branding and how Open Social can facilitate these areas. This is not a group to promote your business through. We will delete all the spammers immediately.
Join the OpenSocial for Business Facebook Group Now! See you there.

I’m confused. In a previous post you conclude that OpenSocial vs. Facebook is a “This is a geek argument.”.
So why start a FB group if it’s a “geek argument”?!
It IS a geek argument. You obviously do not have a deep understanding of branding and how social networks are actually distribution points for content. The challenges for engagement and distribution across multiple platforms is a real problem. Business and brand managers have a pain point and opensocial might actually help reduce that pain point.
So opensocial for branding and business is a relevant topic because brand managers and businsees are always looking at distribution points and how to get traction and visibility in many areas. OpenSocial helps to facilitate that.
Th group is there so people can discuss these issues. Discussion fosters innovation, enlightenment and change.
Rodney,
If I owned FaceReviews.com, I don’t think I would accuse the guy that owns FacebookEconomy.com, Mini-Feed.com, et al. of “not understanding branding”
Speaking of branding, it’s fun watching as you try to explain how the FaceReviews.com domain can somehow be twisted into a name that encompasses OpenSocial.
And I just noticed your tagline, “Facebook Application Reviews”…..how do I know that somehow, someway, that too will be twisted into somethin’ related to OpenSocial.
again, it looks like it’s OpenSocialReviews.com for you!
Yeah, exactly. But one thing I hope you do NOT do is push for the Googlization of Facebook. Right now, there is still a very useful firewall and garden wall against Google — Google in theory cannot scrape your personal data and attention and intention data against your will if you haven’t checked yourself off in Facebook to be vulnerable to their scrape.
And I’m more than fine with that because I’d really like to see a viable social media platform emerge that is a competitor and an independent from Google.
So please, play with your Google Social thingie elsewhere, I won’t be joining it, and keep your paws of trying to merge Facebook into the maw of Google.
Prokfoy, I agree with you.
“But one thing I hope you do NOT do is push for the Googlization of Facebook.”
Trust me… I am not doing that. You would be hard pressed to find anyone that believes in facebook more than me.
The value in facebook is your real world connections.
We tried Google Opensocial. It is not even at Alpha stage. We have also build application in Facebook. When facebook was launched it was in much better state. Facebook apis were well thought over, designed and architectured.
Opensocial is a good idea but it looks like a PR exercise. It says Facebook is proprietary but Google is also proprietary. Just because it uses javascript & html it does not become open.
_IG_RegisterOnloadHandler - is not this proprietary Google method.
Taking into consideration that Google’s first API was hacked in 45 minutes, I don’t know how successful it’s going to be. Sure, they now have MySpace among their partners, but Facebook’s only increasing in popularity, and it’s going to take a bit of time to dethrone the network.
“The value in facebook is your real world connections.”
This is most especially relevant in today’s technologically advanced world, especially taken into account the level of usability–it’s being incorporated as a trackback check for potential job applicants in the corporate world–I’ve used it a few times myself.
I’ve seen a similar post to this on ResourcePad as well, except in that case, it seems a pointed case against the technology. It’s very entertaining, all of this.
