MorphMonkey: Changing the faces of Facebook

Ah another day, another app, this one courtesy of MorphMonkey, a face morphing utility that promises to make you “Go BANANAS!!!” (more of that later). MorphMonkey launched recently an currently has a base of 701 active daily users, or about half of the total installs.
Photo morphing software is nothing new, but, to the best of my knowledge MorphMonkey is the first to show its face on Facebook. After installing the app, users are greeted by a familiar array of celebrities (listed A - Z), from which creepy morphbabies can be created.

For my test, I selected the most logical combination I could think of: George Bush and Osama bin Laden. The mutation is truly terrifying and I believe, sheds some light on the origin of the Cloverfield monster.

More importantly, as you can see, the combination is not very effective. I tried a number of other celebrities and it seems like the app just sticks the hair and eyes of one character onto the face of another. Nothing really progressive here.
But what pains me more than the sight of Osama and Dubbaya’s illegitimate lovechild, is that to use the app with your own pictures, like your friends’ list, flickr account, etc., you have to invite five friends to the service. The user who invites the most friends in a two week span will receive a $25 gift card.

Note that it wants you to invite five friends to continue.
The gift card avenue isn’t so bad as the forcing users to invite to use the app. I’m not happy with this one.
UPDATE: Rodney Here. I recently received some good news from the developers of Morph Monkey (they added some additional functionality) and I have to say that I am very impressed with the improvements to the app. This app has very robust functionality and is actually quite sophisticated in the execution.
I have changed the rating for this app to 4 stars. So go give it a shot… you will enjoy.
I couldn’t stop laughing at Morph Monkeys output of me & Yoda. ![]()

Hahaha, classic!
Thanks for the great review!
Spammy no more. We’d really appreciate it if you remove that tag = ) It was just for a short while, as we were experimenting with forced invites (2, 5, 10, 15), and took it down weeks ago. Happy to share some the results if there is interest.
Also, the screen shots are from our teaser, pre-install screens, not the actual app. The actual app is here: http://apps.facebook.com/morphmonkey/home.php
We are working on creating one of the cleanest and most functional apps on Facebook. I think we’re up to something. Even though our install base is low. Each of he users are creating 10 morphs, the impressions per user are very high, and the site is very sticky.
Thanks again. Great blog.
