chuck.jpgTechCrunch writes that computer science salaries in the silicon valley are soaring amid heavy competition between Google and Facebook for qualified coders. At Stanford, for instance, salaries for grads last year averaged about $70,000 whereas this year’s class is averaging just shy of six figures. And masters of comp sci grads are finding themselves wrestling with poverty with salaries approaching $130,000.

What’s more, the battle for graduates is effecting student developers of Facebook apps as well. Companies are courting students who recently took part in a Facebook Applications class and suggesting that they’re not being hired, but rather acquired and will be allowed to continue along with their own works.

At any rate, it’s nice to see that salaries are skyrocketing in at least one sector as the economy teeters on the edge of a recession. Maybe with the right leadership, technology can bail us out of the pits again, like it did way back in ’90s.
