Facebook expands data center space

Facebook seems to already be making moves on its promise to make $200 million in capital expenditures in 2008. Data Center Knowledge is reporting that the social networking giant has leased all of the space in a new 86,000sqf building owned by Digital Realty Trust.
While neither of the companies would make a definitive comment on whether Facebook is the new tenant, each party issued elusive statements when asked of the possibility. Facebook’s Vp of technical operations said, “I can’t comment on specific data center locations, however, I can tell you we work closely with Digital Realty Trust….”
Estimates indicate that data center space in Santa Clara, where the building is located, range in cost from $125 to $145 per square foot. That would put yearly rent between $10.75 million and $12.3 million, and that’s not including bandwidth. Those numbers will definitely help Facebook get started on spending the $240 million that Microsoft dumped into it this past fall.
