developer.gifFacebook announced last night an important update to Platform that will throttle the number of notifications allotted to each app. Currently every application has a static upper limit of 40 notifications per user per day. That number will now be variable and will be adjusted according to various forms of feedback.

One of the methods used to attribute the new number will be whether people install a particular app or if its ignored or considered spam. Facebook writes:

The new system aims to provide users with more compelling notifications and fewer notifications that they are likely to ignore or consider spam. We hope this change incentivizes developers to improve the quality of their notifications and encourage their users to send notifications to interested friends.

The change will be instituted next week, so if all goes according to plans, the Zombie-horde will soon be eradicated from Facebook. Mwhahaha, or something.

“Viral” is Facebook 1.0 — and I believe not exactly what Facebook had in mind with the came p with the platform. Utility is Facebook 2.0, and exactly what the fbFund is looking for.
