facebook gone wild. Stats are monkey business. Facebook App Stats Reporting Gone Wild: While doing our daily review & analysis of facebook application stats today (Monday) we began scratching our heads. Something is just not right. In fact we are positive that the analytics reporting of facebook apps in the developers area is fully scrambled and facebook has gone wild.

The numbers are just not adding up. We noticed that facebook apps stats were not updating over the weekend; then Monday morning rolls around and things get really wild.

It would appear that the apps reporting is now exposing very different values than anticipated. Some apps have shot up by an order of magnitude of 1000%. Some have only gone up 10-300%. Some have dropped 800%. The numbers are all over the board. There is no consistency in these facebook analytics. Something is crazy here.

Here is one example of what we were seeing… the number should be closer to 140k active installs not 408K. Facebook Gone Wild! If only it were that easy to gain 268K new users in a few days.
facebook analytics gone wild

I suspect that facebook is doing some enhancements to their reporting and somehow managed to expose some weird data sets. I suspect that they will have this ironed out soon enough (give ‘em a few days).

This brings to light a very important topic: Reliable analytics. We always set up all facebook apps on google analytics as a quick baseline for unique visitors, country location, page views, length of visit, etc. We are also employing other new social analytic packages that bring to the surface much more complete reporting.

So just hang tight while facebook goes wild in the reporting arena for now. ;) I also noticed that Adonomics has just posted a freeze on updating of their numbers until facebook sorts out this mess. “Notice: The data from Facebook are off by at least an order of magnitude — until they fix it our stats will remain fixed as of Feb. 14th, 2008.”

I am so glad you posted this article. I was wondering what was going on. My Cheeky Comment Card application went from 3000 to 8000 and now to 250K. I was so confused.

For a $15 billion dollar company, Facebook continually displays their amateur operations.

Not only has the problem been going on for days already, but they fail to post a simple note to the developer’s news/status blog to notify us.
