Scoble & Rumford Discuss Social Media
Published by Rodney Rumford March 31st, 2008 in Branding, Facebook, social media, social networks, twitter.
World renowned Blogger & Video Producer at FastComapny TV Robert Scoble and I discuss how brands can engage on social networks.
We were both in Hollywood for the Community Next Forum on saturday. We cover some of the reasons why companies and brands need to be on social networks like facebook, myspace, Hi5, friendster, FriendFeed, twitter, etc. People are talking about your business anyway; so you need to be engaged and prepared to participate and respond.
We also touch on how Forrester Analyst Charlene Li’s new book Groundswell talks about these very issues of how social networks and social media can create a groundswell in lightning fast time.
We also cite examples of how companies such as iLike garnered several million users in just a few weeks on facebook. All due to the viral spreading of their application though the social graph that exists on facebook.
Robert also talks about how someone from H&R Block responded to a Tweet he did on twitter WHILE he was still in the H&R Block offices getting his taxes done. They were listening. Brands need to be engages with a social media strategy and be listening and willing to respond rapidly to what is being said about their company and brand.
Brands are being hijacked almost continually via blogs, social networks, facebook applications, video’s, Tweets, and many fast evolving ways of users creating and spreading messages/content. I sure hope all the brand managers and CMO around the world are paying attention. There is a lot to be learned and a great opportunity for them on social networks.

way to go buddy. I dig the style. you two should consider speaking and touring together…virtually or for real. you feed well off each other and you make a great interview.
This is great. I’m so happy to see people thinking — and talking — about social media and social networking as more than just entertainment for consumers. Social media has powerful brand building benefits for businesses when harnessed effectively. It allows for direct, one to one communications with your end user to ignite actionable communications, drive brand consumption and build equity in the market. Not by just slapping up a Facebook profile, but by using that vehicle to foster two-way exchanges with customers and translating it directly back to your business initiatives in a highly targeted — and more meaningul — way. There is so much untapped potential here, and what’s amazing about it is that you’re customers are giving you the answers — you just need to use the suite of social tools available to deliver on them.
