First of all, Wired Science is awesome. It’s like Nova combined with Mr. Wizard and rolled into one product that manages to stay informative and amusing. I’m really completely thrilled by the show, but there’s more.
Wired Science recently unveiled its own Facebook app and it’s a winner. The app combines the offbeat nature of the show with a rather ingenuous social networking element.
It starts users off with a series of questions like, “Which celebrity are you most like?” After answering several of these, you’re assigned your own element from the periodic table. I, myself wound up dense and shiny:

Rodney, was also pegged with uncanny accuracy (no doubt based on his selection of one-legged unicorns as a favorite). He was labeled as the bitter and volatile NA — that’s sodium for those of you who didn’t watch Bill Nye.

Here’s where the app gets most interesting. You can create chemical compounds between yourself and your friends’ elements. Rodney and I combine to make one, completely hetero compound with a lustrous metallic finish:

All-in-all, this is a good marketing campaign by Conde Nast owned Wired and PBS broadcasted Wired Science. Sure it doesn’t really do anything, but it’s creative and fun and it spreads the word about the brand. Major props to whoever came up with this one (if it was you, drop me a line).
