Top Friends Application Vanishes? Tech Crunch just reported that they noticed the Top Friends Application has disappeared from users profile pages. We also noticed that the application is no longer in the application directory.

Something is up for sure and more details will follow soon enough I am sure. Top friends was one of the worst offenders of the “spammy” type of behavior that facebook was trying to control. Possibly they stepped over the line one too many times?

Facebook shuts down apps all the time so that is not really newsworthy. What is newsworthy is that top friends has over 32 million installs (that is almost half of all facebook users). It has (I mean had) over 1.6 million daily users. It is the third most popular app on facebook. This app is a money printing press for Slide.

The thing about top friends that I did not like was the way that the application continually increased its real estate by promoting other apps at the bottom of the app on the profile page. It just kept getting longer and longer.

Do you have any further info about why it was shut down? Were they harvesting names, breaking app protocols, etc.? If it’s anything of that nature, poses the need to get a tighter reign on apps et al. Perhaps they could put a panel together to address important issues like these at f8. If Facebook is going to retain — and SUSTAIN — a presence as a social networking leader, it needs to maintain the integrity of its site — even through apps that it caveats ‘were not developed by Facebook.’ At the end of the day, it’s their brand on the line. Thanks for reporting on this breaking news!

You can’t just take away an application without letting the users know with a warning that you’re doing it. It’s not fair to anyone. And just because people were complaining about some of the kinks that came along with Top Friends doesn’t mean that they had a right to delete it from everyone who used it. If someone didn’t like it, they shouldn’t have used it in the first place. I would like to know why they took it away because that was the one application that was actually useful on facebook. Thanks!

This is my first time here, so sorry if I’m asking a silly question, but: Where do you get these valuations from?
