Facebook Kicks Out Some Cool News Feed Filters
Published by Rodney Rumford August 13th, 2008 in Facebook, Facebook News.Facebook news feed gets a new level of filters. Facebook just rolled out new control features on the newsfeed. You can now filter your newsfeed content by application (i predicted this was coming), and your fiend lists.
I have my friends broken into over 20 different lists based upon how I know them, what they do, company, etc. So when I apply the filter of a friend list that is from list X my newsfeed is instantly filtered and populated with all the great stuff from these people. This just plain kicks butt. When I saw this work I jumped out of my chair and screamed YES!
I can also easily see which friends are attending events or which groups or pages they are interacting with. This brings relevancy cleanly and simply to the surface (like google) This puts the proper lens on what matters most to me easily and quickly.
I can also see instantly how friends interacted with a specific application. This is so intuitive once you use it and it is quite useful.
This addresses a concern I had recently about the newsfeed being too slow in velocity of content from my friend network. Now I can drill and filter so quickly and easily expose more relevant content that it is really amazing. In some ways it acts like a swivel search.
I encourage you to play with it see what you think. Put your thoughts in the comments.

Thanks Rodney for pointing this out - this is slick!
I first noticed the new appearance of the number of new messages in my inbox and then started looking for more changes - this brought me to this post and I have finally found the arrow button to apply additional filters.
The only thing I still want is to be able to apply multiple filters simultaneously to be able to see updates from certain friends generated by a certain application.
This has been really helpful - not only for segmenting my contacts and the information they’re sharing, but also for getting a snapshot as to how my various subgroups are using Facebook to share information. Thanks for the heads-up on this, Rodney!
“When I saw this work I jumped out of my chair and screamed YES!”
If that was literally true, perhaps you should go outside more
Yes, this is another great improvement to the Facebook user interface!
I think “All Stories” would make more sense, if the list were longer. There’s so much stuff in there to be skimmed…
I love the “Log Mode” and “Full Stories” options, too.
That arrow is just a link for me that brings me to the same page. Weird because it gave me the drop down a few weeks ago!
Anyone else have this problem or know of a fix? I emailed info@facebook.com but no response yet.
I don’t see this option anywhere - did facebook do away with the ability to control your newsfeed? Please detail the steps you need to take in order to access this feature (what do we click on?)
