Facebook Hits 100 Million User Benchmark
Published by Rodney Rumford August 26th, 2008 in Facebook, Facebook Connect, Facebook News.Facebook Hits 100 Million User Benchmark! The facebook freight train just keeps gaining momentum and picking up new users at a high rate of speed. It seems like only 6 months ago that facebook had 50 million users.
I came across this tweet from facebook employee Dave Morin (who has been heavily involved in the facebook f8 platform since it’s launch).

No official word from the Facebook PR people yet; but I am sure this is gold.
What this really means is that facebook has expanded quite successfully outside of the sites original core demographics of college aged users.
The point that this really brings me to is that facebook now has a social graph of 100 million people and a mind map of their personal connections. This is very valuable; not to mention potentially very useful information. Breaking these connections and data sets outside of facebook to add a social lens on top of other websites is coming very soon via facebook connect.
Websites will effectively be able to use facebook as the authentication mechanisms for a multitude of web services and websites. We have actually played with a working test version of Facebook Connect that acts as a blog comment authentication mechanism and it is really cool.
Facebook Connect is launching with Digg, Amiando, CBS.com, The Insider.com, CNET, Citysearch, CollegeHumor, Digg, Disney-ABC,Television Group, Evite, Flock, Hulu, Kongregate, Loopt, Plaxo, Radar, Red Bull, Seesmic, SixApart, Socialthing!, StumbleUpon, Twitter, Uber, Vimeo and Xobni.
Once these sites start promoting the facebook connect functionality people will join facebook at an increased rate as they see value of seeing their friends interactions on those sites. I suspect that we will see many interesting use cases for interesting ways that facebook connect will be used on many websites in the very near future. Some additional thoughts from Venture Voice here.

Fabulous milestone for sure!!! Facebook are hurtling towards that 500M mark by 2011 I’m sure!!
It’s really starting to feel like back in the day you were the odd one out if you didn’t have a fax machine, cell phone, email. Now you’re totally behind the times if you don’t have a Facebook account!
w00t for sure!!!
Cheers,

100 Million is astounding - talk about opportunity to connect. Looking forward to the release of Facebook Connect and watching the onslaught of new member sign ups.
Great info - thank you

Hi Rodney!
Hi Mari! ; P
I love the fact that Facebook is SO mainstream that it’s almost guaranteed that when you meet new people that someone will ask “Are you on Facebook?” It’s SO cool! ; P
God Bless,
Yoon
P.S. I’ve noticed that my American Friends are mostly on MySpace and couldn’t be bothered with Facebook(some don’t even know what FB is…)! Oh well! ; P
