9 Reasons to Love the New Facebook Design
Published by Rodney Rumford October 2nd, 2008 in Facebook.9 reasons to love the new facebook design. I still hear people crying the blues over the new facebook design. Most people do not like change of software design or websites that they are very familiar with. Facebook had many valid business reasons for moving to this much more flexible and monetizeable design structure. Think about when you upgrade to the new version of windows software; it takes a while to discover all the new functionality and cool new things that are possible. The same holds true for any website that you spend a great deal of time on. (i.e. facebook)
The old facebook design was so simple to use that I could nearly drive it blindfolded; this is not true with the new design. That is at times a bit frustrating. But now that i have my navigational pathways down after playing with the new design for some time I find it much more useful; which is very different from being easy to navigate. With increased functionality comes some trade offs in user interface and experience. Facebook has started to feel much more like software versus a website to me. This is important because I have become more dependent on that “software functionality”. A not so subtle move towards more of a operating system/platform.
Applications have had to work harder/smarter and to compete for real estate on profile pages. This is not a bad thing in general; but it does pose challenges for application developers.
The bottom line here is that if you spend a little time clicking around like a 4 year old you will find all sorts of new functionality. You will find some really interesting Easter eggs (undiscovered functionality). You will start to appreciate and like the new design much more.
So here are 9 reasons to love the new facebook design…
1. The tabbed newsfeed let’s you filter results from your network by type of activity. (see all the events that your friends are attending very easily. I really like this)
2. The news feed has the ability to filter activity based upon friend networks/lists/groupings.
3. EZ access to find friends phone numbers based upon their grouping
4. EZ way to see friends status updates based upon their grouping. Efficient way to listen. I have also noticed many twitter tweets showing up here also.
5. Tabbed design of the profile area. Removes application clutter and easy way to find relevant info regarding the persons profile that you are reviewing
6. The ability to easily filter information and change settings on the profile area
7. The ability to edit and re-size images and mini-feed stories quickly
8. The ability to watch full size video right from the profile page
9. The overall flexibility and customization of the design is fantastic. Some users will find it overwhelming initially. But the more you dive in the better it gets.
Facebook News Feed: tabbed browsing and quick filtering

Facebook profile and mini-feed area.: Tabs for quick navigation and several filter settings

Friends phone numbers with grouping. Same for status updates.

You forgot one - all the additional comment areas throughout the feed, enabling people to comment right there and then on any status or story without first having to click on a profile and scroll through a ton of junk just to find a wall down at the bottom to make one comment. This is by far one of the best features IMO, one I’ve wanted months before the new design came out.
